Summer Pool Safety & ‘Alex’s Law’

School’s out, and summer is here! The temperature is warming up, and it’s looking to be another beautiful Southern California summer.

It’s an important time to remember summer pool safety, especially for adolescents and children. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are on average 10 drowning deaths per day in the United States. Tragically, children 14 and under comprise the bulk of these heartbreaking statistics.

There are plenty of resources for parents to brush up on pool safety and find other tips to help prevent drownings.

Another important development in the category of pool safety is ‘Alex’s Law.’ The law, signed by Governor Newsom last year, requires school districts to have a licensed life guard trained in CPR on hand any time an event is held on a school campus in or around a swimming pool. Even if the event is not an official school event—as long as the school is hosting it—a lifeguard must be present.

The law was passed in response to the horribly tragic drowning death of Alex Pierce, who died in 2016 while attending a school district event in Murrieta.

Stay safe this summer, and remember to enjoy the water and swimming activities responsibly!
