Practical driving safety tips now that Daylight Savings is over

We’re all feeling it!

We changed the clocks, and now it gets dark around 5PM! An hour later, you’d think it was the middle of the night, when in reality it’s……dinner time!

It’s a great time to go over some practical driving safety tips for this time of the year.

Slow Down

Speed is often the cause of serious Los Angeles car collisions. Visibility is less at night, and there are more night hours than day hours during this time of the year. Keep this in mind when you’re driving around town.

Watch out for Pedestrians and Cyclists

It might be difficult to see a pedestrian or a cyclist because it’s darker for longer. If you’re a cyclist, make sure you'r bicycle has functioning lights so drivers behind you and in front of you can see you.

If you’re a pedestrian walking at night, consider wearing a reflector vest. Your kids might think it’s dorky, but it could help prevent a serious incident.

If you’re tired

The best advice is to not drive if you’re tired! Whenever we change the clocks, it does something to all of our internal clocks! Do what you need to do to remain alert when you’re driving. If you’re too tired to drive, DON’T!

Another point to keep in mind: the setting sun can often cause visibility issues. California does not recognize a “the sun was in my eyes” defense to a collision. All drivers must drive in a reasonably prudent manner, taking into consideration all surrounding road, weather, and traffic conditions.
