Los Angeles Among the Worst Roads in the Country

Los Angeles is known for many things. Hollywood, sunny weather, and the Dodgers are usually what come to peoples’ minds when they think of LA. We can now add another title to the list: some of the worst roads in the nation.

A new study out by Copilot lists the cities throughout the country that have bad street surfaces and roads. Los Angeles comes in at number 3—behind only San Jose and San Francisco. It’s sad to see that the top three cities in the country with the worst roads are all in the Golden State.

The study defines the Los Angeles metropolitan area to include Long Beach and Anaheim. Sixty-two percent of all major roads are in poor condition in LA. Almost 12% of interstate freeways are in poor condition. You can read the actual study here.

According to the Auto Club, poor road conditions such as potholes result in about $3 billion per year in vehicle repair costs. Many cities and municipalities undertook road improvements when COVID hit, taking advantage of less vehicle traffic. But there’s still a lot of work to do to improve our roads.

Road damage such as potholes can also be dangerous for motorcyclists and bicyclists. The City of Los Angeles is sued every year for serious injuries caused by bicyclists who get hurt riding over potholes. If you see a pothole anywhere in the City, you can report it using the 3-1-1 app. Once the City has knowledge of a dangerous road, they are considered to be “on notice” and must take reasonable measures to make repairs.
