Jaywalking in California will be legalized
Last year, we discussed proposed changes to some important California laws affecting pedestrians.
Those proposed changes have become law, and starting January 1, 2023, jaywalking will be legal in California.
Previously, it was only legal for pedestrians to cross the street at a marked crosswalk. With the passage of the “Freedom to Walk Act”, pedestrians in California will be able to legally cross the street anywhere, provided that it is safe to do so. Police will no longer ticket pedestrians for the practice formerly known as jaywalking.
The passage of the Freedom to Walk Act highlights the importance of pedestrian safety in California. Pedestrians should always be careful, as sometimes it is easy to misjudge the speed of an approaching vehicle. Drivers should also keep in mind that with the passing of the Freedom to Walk Act, more pedestrians will be crossing busy streets.
My office has significant experience with pedestrian accidents in Los Angeles and Southern California. On a recent pedestrian accident case, we recovered the full six figure policy limits for a pedestrian hit by a distracted driver in Los Angeles.
Be safe while walking and crossing the street! If you were crossing the street in Los Angeles and were injured in a pedestrian accident, give us a call. The initial consultation is free.
