New & Important Laws for 2019

Happy New Year!!As the new year begins, it's a great time to inform my readers, clients, and friends that some important new laws are on the books for 2019 here in California.Helmet LawsAs you know, all bicyclists, skateboarders, and scooter riders under the age of 18 are required to wear helmets. Previously, violations of this law could've resulted in a fine.  The law has been changed--now violations will result in a fix-it ticket.  If a minor is cited, he/she will need to prove that he/she has a proper helmet and the fine will disappear.Laws Affecting Scooters As 2019 begins, it is no longer mandatory for electric scooter riders 18 and above to wear helmets. (Previously, it was required.) Nevertheless, as we discussed scooter accidents here, it's almost always a good idea to wear a helmet while on an electric scooter, even if it isn't required by law anymore.Electric scooter riders are now permitted to ride on streets where the speed limit is 35.  In the past, it was only permitted on streets with a speed limit of 25.  As a reminder, riding an electric scooter on the sidewalk is still illegal, and sadly, this is resulting in more and more injuries.Hit-and-Run LawsPreviously, it was not a crime for a bicyclist who hit a pedestrian to flee the scene.  As the New Year begins, the law now requires a bicyclist who struck a pedestrian or another bicyclist to remain at the scene until police arrive.I wish everyone a safe and prosperous 2019!
