What is Med-Pay Coverage?
As a Los Angeles accident attorney, understanding insurance policies is part of my work. That's because I deal with insurance policies in most of my cases. An important form of coverage is known as medical payments, or "med-pay" coverage.Med-pay allows an injured person to have his or her medical expenses paid by his or her own insurance company, regardless of who is at-fault for the crash. As an example, let's say you're at fault for rear-ending someone else, and you suffer whiplash injuries as a result. If you have med-pay coverage under your own auto insurance policy, you might be able to have your medical expenses paid by your insurance company.Similarly, if you're in an accident and the other driver is at-fault, you might be able to have some of your medical expenses paid through your own auto insurance policy.Med-pay coverage is usually on the lower end. Typical coverages that I've seen are in the $1,000-$5,000 range.Your insurance policy may require you to reimburse your auto insurance company in the event you receive med-pay benefits, and you also recover money for your injuries from another driver's insurance.Note that med-pay coverage is different from uninsured motorist coverage. You should discuss your coverages with your insurance broker, or an attorney knowledgeable in these issues.I recommend that everyone carry both uninsured motorist and med-pay coverage. For questions about your case or insurance coverage, the Rabbi Lawyer is ready to assist, 24/6!
