Automatic Emergency Braking Technology Will Soon Come Standard

Last week, I discussed self-driving cars and the issues surrounding them.That post was in response to questions I've received about whether I'm concerned that improvements in safety technology will eliminate personal injury claims.  As a Los Angeles accident lawyer, I get these questions more and more lately.  I mentioned there that I embrace all forms of technology that will improve safety on our roads.Less personal injury claims mean less people getting hurt!  That doesn't concern me, that makes me happy!  I for one, never want to see people getting hurt, and I'm sure you don't either.The sad reality I see every day in my practice is that someone within my extended web of clients, former clients, friends, or family is injured by someone else not paying attention or behaving negligently.  So as a follow-up to last week's post, I'm pleased to announce that ten of the world's largest automakers announced today that they will install automatic emergency braking systems in all their cars in the near future.Audi, BMW, Ford, GM, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, Toyota, VW, and Volvo will work with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration to develop a reasonable timeline for installing this potentially life-saving technology in all their cars.  Until now, this feature was only available in newer, premium models.  These 10 companies accounted for 57% of American auto sales last year.This is a welcome announcement.  One-third of all collisions are rear-end accidents.  The automatic braking technology could eliminate many car accident scenarios, and mitigate the effects of the not-so-common ones.  Let's hope it succeeds on all fronts.I look forward to the complete rollout of this important safety improvement.Wishing all my clients, friends, and audience, a Shana Tova, and a safe and Happy New Year!And for questions about your case in the New Year and beyond, the Rabbi Lawyer is one phone call away.
