Labor Day Weekend Means More Traffic... And Accidents
Labor Day Weekend! It's the last hurrah of summer, and millions of drivers are taking to the roads for that final summer road trip. With more drivers on the roads this weekend, there's an increase in the potential for accidents. Here are a few tips to stay safe, courtesy of the Rabbi Lawyer!1. Put Down Your Phone! We've discussed this issue so many times, but it's worth repeating if it'll prevent an accident and save a life. Your phone is the single-most distracting factor whenever you get behind the wheel. It's illegal to talk on the phone (unless using hands-free) and to text and email. Please don't do it.2. Plan Your Route. Did you check to see if there are road closures or highway construction on your way to Vegas? You can use Waze to help navigate around traffic, but doing a quick review of your route is a good way to eliminate stress, because stressed-out drivers can be dangerous drivers.3. Don't Drink and Drive! Yes, it might be obvious to many. but there are still far too many accidents caused by drunk drivers in this day-and-age. If you think you've had one drink too many to get in the driver's seat, you're probably right. In fact, it's better to err on the side of caution. While many legal issues with Uber are still being worked out, it's a better alternative than driving drunk and living a lifetime of regret for a split-second mistake.4. Obey the Speed Limit! It's there for a reason! Remember that the left lane is for passing, and the right lane is for slower moving vehicles. And in the off-chance you see a wide-open road in front of you on the Grapevine, remember that it's never a good idea to encourage your friend whose driving to go faster.5. Stay Alert. Whether you're driving back Tuesday morning after pulling an all-nighter, or just going for a cruise around the neighborhood, stay focused on the road at all times. Maintain a safe following distance from the car ahead of you in case of sudden stops. Use your headlights, pay attention, and arrive at your destination safely.I hope everyone's had an incredible summer. I know I have, and wish all my clients, family, and friends, a wonderful holiday weekend and Shabbat Shalom!
