2023 was a tough year on Los Angeles roads

Happy New Year everyone! I hope your 2024 is off to a great start!

Recently, I came across an article discussing the state of affairs for Los Angeles drivers. The article contains some troubling statistics.

In 2023, there were over 300 traffic fatalities in the City of Los Angeles. The numbers were slightly lower than 2022, but still way too high.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, there were 307 traffic deaths in Los Angeles in 2023. The number one cause was distracted driving—ie, cell phone use.

2023 also saw the highest number of Los Angeles pedestrian deaths at 162. We previously discussed that issue here. 23 bicyclists were killed in Los Angeles in 2023. On a different yet serious note, there were 300 murders in Los Angeles last year.

You can read the full report here.

We should all be concerned with these statistics. Los Angeles remains one of the most congested traffic areas in the country. But that’s no excuse for over 300 people losing their lives. Nearly every week we read stories about hit-and-run drivers causing serious injuries or death to innocent bystanders. And while we enjoy some of the best climate conditions in the country, pedestrians and bicyclists should be able to enjoy their activities without the fear of getting hit by a distracted driver.

Let’s make 2024 the safest year yet for Los Angeles drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians!
